Investigation Blog Post 18

Introduction: It’s been a while since we did an investigation blog post so it took me a bit to figure out what to do. The topic I decided on doing is looking at some of the most popular genres in cinema in the world today. The top three are; Adventure, Action, and Drama. It’s interesting because I was expecting horror and comedy to be one of the top three along with action movies. Since a lot of people haven’t been able to go to the movies online streaming platforms have been getting a lot more attention and can lead to more film genres being explored than others. These films do make sense I feel since this is content more people have been watching especially in Action with things like Marvel’s WandaVison and Falcon and The Winter Soldier coming out on Disney+. 

Inspirations: For this, I decided to look up the top few movies in each section (for some reason it mostly gave me movies that people were looking forward to coming out so I just put those).

Adventure: No Mans Land, Nomadland, Raya and the Last Dragon, Vivo, Luca, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Seven Rings, Uncharted, Dune, Mission: Impossible 7, Encanto. Brainstorming/Experimentation: Well I think it makes sense why these are the top current genres since there is a lot of movies people are looking forward to in each. I think these genres became the most popular since the pandemic lead us to want more things like adventure so we match more of that. People also missed other people, unless you are anti-social and like shows like Bridgerton. People also want action movies since they couldn’t do much, but I mean action movies have always been big so that makes sense to me. I do like these genres and would definitely make something in them. The thing I would probably do the best in though is an adventure since I like more adventure books. Of all these movie genres I do prefer action the most since that’s the kind of movies we mostly watch, but I’d probably need a lot of help to make an action movie. I don’t know if I’d ever want to make a drama film since I don’t really like to watch movies like that.

Reflection: This week was a kind of chill week since I was just looking at the top three film genres of this year. I do think these choices for top choices so far do make sense for what’s happened in recent events and with the pandemic. I do think it’s sad that musicals are so far down on the list, but I don’t think a lot of people like to watch musicals as much. The overall chart is especially interesting looking at movie charts from over a few years. It definitely surprised me where most of the things there since I thought some would be higher than others. I did look at another source (https://www.the-numbers.com/market/2021/genres) and it said that the top three were action, adventure, and thriller/suspense. I guess it depends on exactly what numbers you look at.
