Investigation Blog Post 17

Introduction: This week’s blog post is about the role of color in creating the right atmosphere. A lot of times in film and shows colors help the audience get an idea of the tone of the film and the emotions of a character. Certain colors in the film are usually associated with a character's feelings and actions. I found this amazing site that explains and gives examples of color used in the film. The primary reason for using color in the film is to make the images colorful, dynamic, and beautiful. But the use of color doesn't just help with the visual storytelling. The use of color in the film also tells us the story and gives us more of an understanding of what a character might want us to think about them and affects how we see them. A good example that I can think of at the top of my head would be the horror movie Suspiria. Both the 1977 version and the recent 2018 version. They both have such an amazing color pallet and also have opposite color chooses. While the 1977 version is filled with so many colors the 2018 version has muted colors to show a context and the different tone and ideas of the two films.

Inspiration: I found a youtube video that gives good examples of color in the film along with films I found that were impacted by the film on this site. (I apologize if there are any repeats in the video and the list)

  • The Red Shoes

  • The River

  • Gate of Hell

  • Lola Montes

  • Written on The Wind

  • Vertigo

  • Floating Weeds

  • Contempt

  • The Red Desert

  • The Masque of The Red Death

  • Don't Look Now

  • Mishima: A Life in Four Chapters

  • The Last Emperor

  • Yeelen

  • The Cook, The Thief, His Wife, and Her Lover

  • Raise The Red Lantern

  • Three Colors: Blue

  • In The Mood for Love

  • Amelie

  • The Grand Budapest Hotel

Brainstorming/Experimentation: I think that color in the film is so important to show the audience the tone and the way you want them to see the film. Color is such an amazing way to showcase messages throughout the film and what the filmmakers what you so see and understand about characters. The environmental characters can also be important since the event a character is in can also be affecting their actions. Another good example is the movie His House on Netflix. I watch a podcast called The Dead Meat podcast and they talk about anything horror-related and for this film they discuss the use of color in this film. I haven’t watched the film myself, but it’s investing to hear about the colors. It is a two-part video, but I’ll just link part two where they discuss the colors in more dept within the film. In the past few short films of mine, I haven’t necessarily focused on color, but it is another thing to add to the film.

Reflection: Looking into the use of color in the film was fun to see how colors make an impact on how a film can be perceived. Color is an amazing way to express emotions and give an overall feeling to the film. Engaging color in the environment and the overall feeling of a film can give the audience ways to see into how this event can impact the characters. Another thing is also the lack of color in films. Some films choose to have very dull color choices or not any color at all. The lack of color also allows us to focus more on characters and the emotions they display. I think its’ a really fun idea when more current films choose to be black and white and it’s a creative choice. Colors or just black and white are such amazing ways to make a film even better.
