Investigation Blog Post 21

Introduction: This week’s blog post is about the use of special effects makeup in films. I’ve always been interested in special effects makeup for movies and also creatures, anything created from special effects. A show that we used to watch a lot at my dad’s house was called Face-Off where artists would create things using special effects. It was such a cool show and I loved seeing how these things were made. Also the show Jim Henson Creature Shop was amazing. I like a lot of things like that creating things like classic horror creatures to out-of-this-world things. I know that I have talked about special effects before and claymation, but the makeup for movies is another thing that added to movies. It could be even the most simple things that special effects makeup artists will do that we don’t even notice as the audience.

Inspiration: For this, I decided to look at famous Syfy makeup artists.

  • Glenn Hetrick-Star Trek: Discovery The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 2, The Hunger Games.

  • Vee Neill-Beetlejuice, Mrs. Doubtfire, and Ed Wood.

  • Patrick Tatopoulous-Independence Day, Bram Stoker's Dracula, Stargate

  • Neville Page-Tron: Legacy, Cloverfield, and Avatar.

  • Lois Burwell-The BFG, Lincoln, and War Horse

  • Micheal Westmore-Star Trek: The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, and Voyager

  • Rick Baker-An American Werewolf in London. The zombies from Michael Jackson's "Thriller", and Maleficent.

  • Matthew Mungle- Dracula, Hillbilly Elegy, and Albert Nobbs

  • Stan Winston-the Terminator series, the first three Jurassic Park films, Aliens, the first two Predator films, and Iron Man.

  • Kevin Yagher- Sleepy Hallow, Bride of Chucky, and A Nightmare on Elm Street: Dream Warriors.

Brainstorming/Experimentation: I would love to learn how to do these things, but I’m not really talented with makeup and coming u with ideas like that. I’d rather come up with a story to go with makeup like that. I would love to work with special effects makeup and create stories with all this creative makeup and creatures. Some of my favorite makeup effects come from movies like Beetlejuice because they seem really simple, but they also need a lot of creative thinking. Some of these movies credited for these artists makeup you wonder where they are needed, but when oy look for it, it is there. Any wounds in movies, and dead bodies, even tiny scratches, special effects artists will help with those. They can do a lot in movies, even creating whole new creations. I would love to create something with special effects, not just having actors.

Reflection: I can’t believe this is my last investigation blog post this year. I had a lot of fun in class this year and I’m going to miss it my senior year. I really liked looking into special effects and the people responsible for helping to make them possible. I was really sad when they canceled Face-Off but there are still ways to enjoy special effects through films. A little bit ago I watched Hellboy for the first and I got to experience the makeup effects done to create that movie and it was really cool. I love special effects makeup and I’m glad artists are able to create all these amazing effects and creatures for movies and shows. Just remember that even if it might seem like there are no effects, in one way or another there is makeup involved. Even for some of the simplest things like cuts, they help make that possible.

Work Log: I put all my clips into premiere pro, I just need to put them all together with the voice-over.
