Introduction: This week I wanted to look into the history of sci-fi. I've always liked sci-fi films there, very creative and futuristic. Me and my family would always watch face off on the syfy channel and we were amazed with the creations they made. It's a genre characterized by stories involving conflicts between science and technology, human nature, and social organization in futuristic or fantastical worlds. Most of the films are created using special effects technology. It's really an amazing genre since it combines a lot of creativity with technology to create one big film. One of the most well known sci-fi films is Avatar and series like the Marvel movies, Star Wars, and Star Trek. People, even more today as technology evolves, love special effects in films because it's so fun to watch. Special effects are fun, but even then practical effects are even more amazing with personal effort put into each prop.
Inspiration: Sci-films usually all have some of the same elements such as: its set in a futuristic environment and an otherworldly place. There's some kind of conflict and uses a lot of technology and introduces us to these new concepts and ideas in these new universes and worlds. A lot of sci-fi films have to do with aliens and people interacting with one another. Other movies are a mixture of horror and sci-fi or other combinations. These directors brought some of the most creative and amazing sci-fi movies:
James Cameron (Terminator 1 & 2, Aliens, and Avatar)
Stanley Kubrick (2001: A Space Odyssey)
Steven Spielberg (Close encounters of the third kind, E.T, and Jurassic Park)
George Lucas (Star Wars)
M. Night Shyamalan (The Sixth Sense, Unbreakable, and Signs)
Science fiction is a speculative fiction that typically deals with imaginative and futuristic concepts such as advanced science and technology, space exploration, time travel, parallel universes, and extraterrestrial life. We see those examples in those films. What makes this genre really incredible is that each film is different, and they each have their own way of using the genre. One of the most earliest examples of Sci-fi is A Trip to the Moon. Space and time travel are usually one of the defining factors of a sci-fi film along with, science, robots or monsters, aliens/alien invasions and more. People are mostly drawn to the genre because they like to use their imagination and see all these futuristic and alien worlds that we could possibly see in our own future, here's some more information.
Brainstorming and Experimentation: Sci-fi films would probably be a genre I would want to do when I had more experience creating films, since a lot of the time it uses a lot of technology. I would probably create a more practical sci-fi movie with special effect makeup with some friends. I looked up some short sci-fi films to see how people are creating them. Usually films rely on a good amount of special effects, it doesn't always have to be like that, but usually that's one of the most common themes in these films. A way you could create your own sci-fi film is having it set in some kind or new world and have a problem or conflict. If you want aliens or other humanoid characters you could always make your own or learn more about special effects on computers.
Reflection: Looking at sci-fi movies was a lot of fun, and I got to look into films I've seen or films I haven't to get an idea of how these genre works. Maybe one say, sometime over the summer or when I have time, I could create my own short sci-fi film. Some films in the genre are so bad that their good, but the overall film would make up for it. Films also depend on your taste in films. I like most film genres, because it's fun to escape your own world sometimes and join in someone else's adventure. The overall genre of sci-fi is very fascinating since it uses fantasy, action, science and so many other genres in one big genre. Sci-fi is a film genre I would like to watch more since it's such a fun genre. I haven't seen that many movies/tv series from it, but that's on my bucket list to do when I have time.
